Who can help? : Associations

This illustration shows the variety of household goods that are counterfeited. |
Associations are a useful way of tracking the threats as well as the solutions in the brand protection arena.
For instance each industry will have its own trade association and many of these trade associations will provide their members with legal and operational advice on how to protect themselves against product piracy.
Many of these trade associations carry out operation duties such as building intelligence on criminals, distributors and businesses involved in marketing pirated products. They also work closely with enforcement agencies such as the Police, local trading standards teams and Customs to identify counterfeit products and ensure that they are removed from circulation. In this way they protect the consumer from any risks that may incur in using pirated goods.
Trade Associations act as an important link between industry and government often lobbying on behalf of their members to ensure that any penalties handed down to counterfeiters by the judiciary are seen as a deterrent as well as a penalty for criminal activity.
